EVIDENCE FROM MITOCHONDRIAL DNA

Below is an electron micrograph of a mitochondrion which are tiny subcellular organelles that produce energy for the cell: they contain DNA, which is inherited through the egg in humans.

Mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, is DNA found in subcellular organelles called mitochondria. mtDNA is maternally inherited in primates, and theoretically can be traced back to the “original” mother or Eve. The proponents of this theory analysed the mtDNA from a 148 people and after establishing a mtDNA mutation rate, calculated that the common ancestor existed about 300,000 years ago and the first migrations of modern H. sapiens out of Africa occurred about 180,000 years ago.
